Candle is a free iPhone app that quietly remembers the birthdays that matter, then gently taps you on the shoulder in time to do something about them. No accounts. No ads. No guilt. Just the people you love, and the small, joyful act of showing up for them.
An External Memory, Not Another To-Do List
Most birthday apps are really just to-do lists wearing a party hat: a wall of 100 names, a running count of everyone you've missed, and a nagging red badge that turns a happy occasion into homework.
Candle was built for one person in particular: my wife, whose brain was already juggling a loud calendar and a hundred open tabs. She didn't need another list. She needed an external memory that holds every detail, stays silent until the moment it's useful, and treats a two-word "happy birthday" text as a genuine win.
How it stays calm
- A short, breathable home screen. Today, this week, next week, later this month. The birthday six months away stays tucked away until it's actually close. When nothing is coming up, Candle simply says "Nothing needs you right now."
- One tap to start full. Candle pulls in every birthday already saved in your contacts, and only contacts with birthdays, so your favorite pizza place stays out of it.
- Two gentle nudges a year, at most. One heads-up a week before (enough time for a gift or card to arrive) and one on the day, with a one-tap "send a text." No red anywhere. No badges, ever.
- Sparks. See a perfect gift in a shop window? Capture it in five seconds as a photo, link, note, or voice memo, without deciding who it's for. Sort it later (or never).
- The Gift Vault. What you gave last year, and the ideas you've saved, folded neatly away until you need them.
Private by design, free by choice
No account and no sign-up. Everything lives in your own iCloud, syncing privately across your devices. Nothing is uploaded, sold, or tracked, and the app stays completely free.
The Book Behind the App
Built by Chris Weiss, inspired by the themes of memory in The Second Chance Cinema by Thea Weiss.
A birthday is really a celebration of shared memories, and so is the novel this app grew up beside. Inside Candle, the book even earns its keep: when a gift vault is empty and you're stuck for an idea, the app suggests giving a story about shared memories. There's also a night theme, Starlight, painted the exact night-sky blue of a certain book cover.
